Trail Rating Systems

Trail Rating Systems provide an invaluable guide to both experienced off-roaders and those who are just beginning to enjoy the adventures and thrills of off-roading.

By identifying and categorizing trails as to different levels of difficulty, you can immediately identify trails that you can take without running into much difficulty. Also you can identify which trails to avoid. This can especially important if your traveling 'old' trails with a new vehicle or someone else's vehicle.

I've found that by marking my maps with a trail rating I've been able to avoid getting into trouble on future trips. I mark the trails & roads on my maps with a difficulty rating each time it changes. I've found that it also helps:

when describing trails to others

helping me prepare my vehicle

helps me determine what I need to take on each trip

 Trail Rating Systems:

Moab Ratings 4+ MOAB-style Rating System - most commonly used for grading standard off-road trails
Ten Pt System My own 10 pt. system - quite similar to the trail rating system used by Massey & Wilson in their 4WD ADVENTURES books
it is more detailed as to required equipment.
(My #1 trail is similar to a MOAB 1 trail & my #9 trail approximates a MOAB 4+ (rock crawler style trail)
