| The TRAIL ETIQUETTE
expressed here is a compilation from many sources, including National Park
Service brochures, BLM brochures, offroad magazines, offroad guidebooks,
etc. Not all sources dealt with all subjects but I've included those that
seem best to encompass the subject. |
NOTE:
I've removed the heading and bottom graphics in order to facilitate
printing this list. |
| 1. Obey regulatory and private
signs. |
| 2. Leave gates as you find
them. Don't disturb wildlife or livestock. |
| 3. Take out only what you bring
in. Clean up after yourself and those who came before you. Haul out your
trash. |
| 4. Camp only in established
campsites. Camp on mineralized soil, NOT ON GRASS!, at least 200 feet from
the banks of streams, ponds & lakes. Be sure of the legality of using
campfires & always use a firepan & bring your own fuel. |
| 5. Avoid parking on hillsides,
streambanks, meadows or grass or shrubs. Hot exhausts can start fires.
| 6. If you get lost, have a
vehicle breakdown or get stuck, stay with your vehicle. A vehicle is easier
to find than a person and provides shelter. |
| 7. Many offroad 'trails' are
technically roadways. Obey all traffic laws. |
| 8. Never drive in designated wilderness or
wilderness study areas or those posted as NO VEHICLE ACCESS PERMITTED.
(violation will put you on a federal felon list) |
| 9. Avoid spinning tires, that will just get
you stuck and you mess up the trail or road for others. |
| 10. Avoid crossing streams. Do so only at
established crossings and do it slowly. (If your fan splashes water into
your intake - well - it can be really expensive and embarrassing.) |
| 11. Stay on established trails & roadways.
| 12. Vehicles traveling uphill have the
right-of-way over those coming downhill. |
| 13. If you traveling more slowly that the
vehicle behind, pull over and allow them to pass. |
| 14. If you must stop, pull off the roadway
in a safe area. If you must leave the vehicle, set the park brake and place
manual transmissions in the lowest gear. |
